Roman! :}

This post will be like a museum of Roman art history....
Do you want to know why??
Because it will have the a lot of ancient information!!
So....let's start with 8th century B.C!

Architecture
In 8th century B.C.............
Roman was excelled in art & architecture by using arch*, vault*, and concrete better than anyone else. Roman was assimilated all other cultures.
*Arch - curved architectural element used to span an opening.

*Vault - arched roof or covering made of brick, stone, or concrete.

-Colosseum:
Wall- made from concrete, decorated with plaster and marble.
Height- 16 stories building, 144 feet tall
Capacity- can fit up to 50 thousand people
Statues- niche filled with statues (copy Greek statues)
3 Emperors involved in construction- Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian
Its used to be a place for entertainment and need to have a ticket to enter!!
The standard Roman sequence was Corinthian- top
                                                          Ionic- middle
                                                          Doric- bottom

-Pantheon:
Purpose- a temple for all the God
Walls- 20 feet thick (because its need to support the huge dome on the top). Its decorated with coffered.
Coffered- a ceiling with coffered.
Floors- 144 feet diameters
Dome- 144 feet from the floor. It is thicker at the base and thinner at the top
Oculus (the hole on the dome)- 30 feet wide
Drainage system- it is in the floor (because its have a hole on top of the dome so its need to have a system that protect the Pantheon from flooding.)

-Roman Baths: (Only RICH people)
Pools- It is for their hygiene
Temperature-Caldarium=hot (heat with stone under the pool)
                      Tepidarium=room temperature
                      Frigidarium=cold

-Arch of Constantine (Triumphal Arch):
Its celebrates the Constantine assumption of power.

-Forum Romanum:
It is used for discussion hall, big meeting hall, and political hall. (Also used for shopping and movie theater)

-City Planning;
It is planned for running water, city square, pay roads, section of area, and more!
-Homes:
Domus- It is for rich people. It have a running water, atrium, veranda, many rooms and 2 stories. (Also built around the garden)
Insulae- It is for poor people. It is a simple flats house, no water and few rooms.

-Aqueducts (a marvel of engineering!):
Use- to bring a water from the high mountain to the city by the force of gravity.
Concrete- They only repair it at April 1 & November 1! (because the temperature affected the concrete to expand and contract and after that its crack.....)
Rome have 77 aqueducts.
It is a composed of arches and vaults.

Sculpture
-Head of Augustus:
Now it was located at J. Paul Getty Museum.

-Constantine the Great (or Emperor Constantine):
Height- approximately 30 feet tall
Eyes- his eyes are big because to show that the eyes are the window to the soul
He is Catholic.
He was founded in 50 A.D

-Equestrian statues:
Marcus Aurelius;-
Made of bronze.
It is a only bronze statue that survive from Roman in a good condition.

Victor Emmanuel II;-
It was built to honor the 1st king of a unify of Italy.

-Column of Trajan:
The column looks like a comic strip because it record all of the Trajan's victory.

It comic strip was a bas relief because it is flat like a coin :)

-Paintings:
Use- to decorated the house; family portrait and fake landscape.
Fresco- painting in wet plaster

-Pompeii;
It is the Roman town-city near modern Naples. It was destroyed and buried by a volcano from the  Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Pompeii was lost for nearly 1700 years before its rediscovery in 1748.

-Mosaics:
Size- 1-2 cm only (each pieces)
Smaller stone- 150 tiles per 1 square cm.
Once, they founded a 7 thousands square feet of mosaics!

Are you ready for Greek art history?

Here we go!!!
Begin with the SCULPTURE in Archaic period-
Statue of a Youth
- This statue was founded in 600 BC
- He represents Apollo or an idealized athelete.
- He has a archaic smile :D

Kritios Boy
- Founded in 480 BC
- He stands in contrapposto or counterpose
(Contrapposto is weight shifted to one leg, one knee bent)

Classical period-
3 Goddesses
- Founded in 435 BC
- They were larger than life!
- They were on the east pediment of the Parthenon
- They are commemorating the birth of Athena
(Pediment is a triangular area at the top of the facade (face) of a building)

Helenistic period-
The Dying Gaul
- Found between 230-22- BC
- This is not a Greek sculpture
- It is a Roman copy of a Greek Bronze.

Nike of Samothrace
- Founded in 200 BC
- She is the winged of victory
- She lands on the bow of a ship

ARCHITECTURE in Classical period:
Caryatids
- Found between 421-405 BC
- It is a female figures used to support architecture rather than column

Parthenon
- Found between 448-432 BC
- It built 8 years; post&lintel construction; use 70 thousand pieces
- The column is 33 ft long; the dimension is 101 ft wide, 228 ft long
- It was recreation in Nashville, TN
- It celebrated the Athena Parthenon and dedicated to their patron goddess Athena
- There are no straight line on this building
(In 1800, people tried to fixed it but it didn't get better)

- It is a large storage jar with 2 handles
- It was signed by Exekias

The Peloponnesian War
- It happen between 431-404 BC
- It was an ancient Greek war fought by Athens and its empire against the Peloponnesian League led  by Sparta
- It strip the parthenon and brought down the whole city
3 Orders of Architecture
- It consists of Doric, Ionic, Corinthian

Venus De Milo (Aphrodite of Milos)
- It was discovered in 1820
- It believed to depict Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of love and beauty

- It is the highest point in the city
- It is the symbols of everything

Athena Parthenon
- 44 ft tall
- She is coverd gold!!

Do you know anything about EGYPT!!?

Egypt ;-)


ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE:
 
Mastabas
It is locate in Saqqara, Egypt. It was built by Imhotep..he was the 1st Egyptian to build structures. The facade (face) was made by limestone!!
 
Gina
-The pyramids at Giza were built for Khufu, Khafre& Menkaure between 2600-2460 B.C.
 
Khufu

It is base 755 feet long O.O. It is TWICE as tall as Zoser's pyramid.

Sphinx
It is a GIANT statue of Khafre!!! (a cross between a human and a lion). It is 240 ft long, 66 ft tall...it is very tall :) The purpose is to guarded tombs&temples not for target practice by Napoleon!
 
Abu Simbel
It is a statues of Ramses II. Its built to honor Nefertani (the wife). This statue was moved 200ft to higher ground because of the dam!!
 
King Tut's Tomb
The tomb is the only part that is untouchable!!
*The HONEY is the only food that does not spoil and was founded in the Tut's tomb...
 
Nefertiti
She is the queen to Akenatan, who created a sun-cult. She was given an artistic prominence, and she was famed to be the MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN in Egypt!!!!!
 
Colossi of Memnon (Statues of Amenhotep III)
Its used to make a moaning sounds at dawn&dusk. The purpose of Memnon is to greeting&bidding farewell to his mommy. But, the Roman emperor fixed them around 200 AD and they fell silent... :(
 
 
PAINTING:
 
Canon of Proportion
This whole picture is based on measurements of the figure's fist. The purpose for this system is to make a consistently regconizable image.

Pre-History :)

Let's begin with the pre-history outside America.....
 
Venus of Willendorf
This statue is founded between 25,00-21,00 B.C. and it known as the oldest art piece!! The Venus of Willendorf is made out of limestone. It is about 4.3 inches tall and the purpose of this statue was to fertility God.
 
Lascaux Caves
The Lascaux Caves is located in France. It is founded at 15,000 B.C..This cave is the earliest cave painting. It is not painted by a paint brush ,but it is painting by a sprayed paint through tubes/bones. All animals that are painted in the caves are painted by memory! Now the cave is closed due to the air&breath caused deterioration.
 
Stonehenge
I know that a lot of you heard about Stonehenge before, but i guarantee that you don't know what is it made of.... hahaha :P It is post&lintel construction and the Aubrey Holes is 56 pits filled with cremated bones and rubble. It is built in England between 2,800-1,500 B.C. to be a Religious Ceremony.
 
Ziggaurats
Ziggaurats is located at UR, Mesopotamia (Iraq) and founded between 2,100-2,000 B.C. Now God&Ruler became central to the creation of art, as a form of worship. The Ziggaurants is seen as a way to reach to God.
Pre-History in North America....


Serpent Mound
It is an effigy mound and built by a prehistoric Native Americans. Serpent Mound is the largest mound in the world! (3' high, 1348' long). It is built for religious purpose not a burial site. It is built in 1070 C.E.
 
The Great Gallery



 

The Great Gallery is located in the Canyonlands Nat'l Park, UT. It is some of the most significant pictographs in North America.
